Escalation in Arms Race

India has announced that it will be launching its locally-developed Agni-V missile in 2014-2015. Given its range of more than 5,000 km (3,100 miles) the Agni-V would be able to deliver a 1.5 ton warhead into Chinese territory. Agni-V’s striking range is from 700km to more than 5,000km. India is claiming that the missile could be launched from a mobile platform. This is concerning for India’s long time rival, Pakistan. This missile will greatly strengthen India’s nuclear deterrence. India’s successful testing of the Agni-V is a part of the recent escalation of the arms race in Asia.

Last month, the Chinese government reported a double-digit increase in military spending. In response to India's recent testing, Liu Weimin, the PRC Foreign Ministry spokesman, has stated that India and China are “not competitors but partners.”
