The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) Director-General Irina Bokova denounced the recent
killings of two Pakistani journalists. UNESCO, the UN agency tasked with
defending the freedom of press responded to the killings with grave concern.
Since 2002, the bodies of twenty-five journalists and media workers have been
found tortured and strangled. The government of Pakistan’s continued crackdown
on the media within the state continues to alarm the UN and the international
community as a whole.
